Name: JAPANESE EARLY 20TH CENTURY CARVED WOODEN PIPE CASE BY TOSHIYAMA SOKO

Description: Japanese early 20th century carved wooden pipe case by master carver, TOSHIYAMA SOKO (1868 - 1936). The carved design depicts Tengu and Okame (Otafuku). It is incised with kanji text which contrasts the 'high & low' physical attributes of the characters to symbolize fertility & reproduction. The rim of the opening has been mounted with goldtone metal. Toshiyama Soko was from Kanazawa, but he moved to Osaka and studied with many top artist. This case measures 8 1/2" long, 1 1/8" wide and 3/4" deep. (nosusu)
