Description: |
Japanese Early-Mid 20th Century large bizen-yaki 備前焼 (bizen ware) ceramic shishi 獅子 (guardian lion) okimono 置物 (objet d’art) by Fujiwara Tosai 藤原陶斎 (1898-1978). The okimono 置物 is beautifully done with a lot of detail and movement to the modeling.

Incised signature: 陶斎 (Tosai)
Biography: Fujiwara Tosai was born in Meiji 明治 30 (1898). He was the first generation of a line of bizen 備前焼 ceramic artists that continues today. His son Fujiwara Toshin, born in Shōwa 昭和 16 (1941), became a Nitten 日展 (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) artist. Fujiwara Tosai died in Shōwa 昭和 53 (1978). |
