Japanese Mid 20th Century mingei (folk art) sosaku kokeshi-ningyō (creative kokeshi doll). Beautifully hand made and painted from a single piece of wood. Signed by the artist on back near base. This doll stands 12" tall with a 2 3/8" diameter head and a 2 1/2" diameter base.
Condition: Aged patina to wood and several small indentations or gouges to surface that do not distract from appearance.
Kokeshi dolls are wonderful examples of mingei or folk craft from Japan, that express the beauty of minimalism in design and the respect for the dento or traditional design, that is repeated by the artisans to follow the established design of their particular village's kokeshi-ningyō. Some dolls, such as this one, are of sosaku or creative design, that keep the minimalism but artistically differ from norm and use modernist design or unique style elements.
