Name: Japanese Lacquer Box with Insects by Okada Shihoh 'Yuji" (1948-2022)

Description: Japanese contemporary lacquer box by artist Okada Shihoh "Yuji' (1948-2022).

This is the last box created by Yuji shortly before his death on August 16, 2022.

Design features a high relief beetle in gold lacquer on the end side, a dragonfly and a spider with web on the top of the lid. The long sides of the lid are a modernist design of alternating wavy lines in gold lacquer and inlaid abalone shell. The eyes of the dragonfly are done in carved mother-of-pearl.

Different lacquer techniques are used including maki-e and nashiji of gold and beetle wings.

Comes with tomobako 共箱 (original artist signed wooden storage box).
